Earl Campbell, Running Back
Texas, 1974-1977

earl campbell throwback jerseyFew college football running backs inspired the love from college football fans, and from his own school's fans, more than the "Tyler Rose", Earl Campbell. Even though Ricky Williams' stats blow away Campbell's, the eyes of Texas fans still mist up a bit more at the memories of Campbell bowling over and running past Southwest Conference teams to one of the greatest careers in college football history.

Coming from Tyler, Texas and he got his work ethic helping support his large family, he was the sixth of 11 kids, by working in the rose fields and a night job a K-Mart. His father's passing away from a heart attack when Earl was 11 made Campbell mature in a hurry. After his father's death, he was introduced to football and turned his maturity and work ethic into one of the great careers the game of football has ever seen.

The recruiting battle: As a high school senior, he moved over from linebacker to running back and helped lead John Tyler high school to the State championship and touched off one of the more intense recruiting battles of the time with Texas, Oklahoma, Baylor, Houston and Arkansas all fighting hard for Campbell's services. Texas went so far as to put an assistant coach in a hotel in Tyler for 17 days to try and persuade Campbell to come to Austin. After narrowing his choices to Oklahoma and Texas, he verbally committed to Texas after visiting the Austin campus but when it came time to sign, he thought about switching to OU. As legend has it, he left the choice up his bladder. On the night of the signing day, he prayed before going to bed that if he had to get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, the decision would be Texas. If he slept through the night, the choice would be Oklahoma. Unfortunately for Sooner fans, nature called.

From the moment he stepped on the field he was a success running for 928 yards as a freshman and helping to lead Texas to the share of the SWC title in his sophomore year, but after an injury plagued junior year, the Rose bloomed in his historic senior season.

1977: The legendary head coach Darrell Royal retired following the 1976 season. New head man Fred Akers made a few adjustments moving Campbell to a pure "I" formation tailback and Campbell responded. In a 44-0 opening game win over Boston College, Campbell ran for a decent 87 yards and one touchdown. That would be his only average game tearing off games of 156, 131, 124, 188, 213, 116, 173, 153, 181 and 222 yards leading the Longhorns to the No. 1 ranking and a chance to win the national title against Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl. The Irish did as good a job as anyone in containing Campbell holding him to 116 yards in a 38-10 Irish win, but that loss still didn't diminish a Heisman Trophy winning season in which Campbell tore off 1,744 yards (a 6.5 yard per carry average) and 18 rushing touchdowns. He also caught five passes for 111 yards and a score.

The career stats: In his college career, he ran 765 times for 4,443 yards ((5.8 yard per carry average) and 40 touchdowns. He also caught six passes for 128 yards and a score.

The pro career: Few NFL rookies ever made the impact Campbell did bursting onto the scene with the Houston Oilers as the No. 1 draft pick to win the MVP, Rookie of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year highlighted by one of the greatest performances of all-time in a 199 yard, four touchdown performance on Monday Night Football against Miami. After carrying the ball a whopping 1883 times in his first six seasons (313 carries per year) he simply wore out. All the carries proved to be too much wear and tear finishing his career with the New Orleans Saints. In his eight year career, his 9,407 yards and 74 touchdowns would be good enough to land him in the Hall of Fame.

After football: Campbell owns his own business working on Earl Campbell Foods, opening up a restaurant in Austin and is an assistant in the UT athletic department helping out in recruiting and as an ambassador for the school.
