Brian Bosworth, Linebacker # 44
Oklahoma, 1984-1986

Brian Bosworth was brash, arrogant, annoying and a total and complete bust as a professional football player. The Boz taunted opponents, fans and the NCAA with his headbands, hairstyles and colorful comments in the press. He was also one of the greatest linebackers college football has ever seen with the talent to back up all the bravado. Behind all the gimmicks and and all the self-promotion, Bosworth was a tremendous football player with an ability to rise up in the big games and a tackling ability second to none.

The mid-80s Sooners: The standard bearer for football brashness in the mid-1980s was the 1985 Chicago Bears, but the Sooners were a close second with an interesting, and marvelously talented, cast of characters from the head coach Barry Switzer to TE Keith Jackson to QB Jamelle Holieway, who was seen walking around in fur coats on the sidelines following a knee injury, to the leader of this fun bunch, The Boz. OU had fallen on hard times, by its own high standards, in the early 80s losing to Nebraska from 1981 to 1983. Then in 1984 OU won the Big 8 title and played Washington in the Orange Bowl for a possible shot at the national title. In the infamous Sooner Schooner game, the Huskies won 28-17, but even with the loss, the stage was set.

In 1985, the Sooners suffered an early loss to Miami as QB Troy Aikman was knocked out with an injury, but Holieway came in and led OU to the national title beating Penn State in the 1986 Orange Bowl. OU would go 11-1 in the 1986 season as Bosworth finished his career on teams going 31-4-2.

The man could hit: Bosworth wasn't a "blow them up" type of hitter, but he was in on just about every play making 395 tackles in his three years including a school record 22 in the 1986 classic against Miami. He was the model of consistency and improved each year making 128, 131 and 136 tackles leading the Sooners in tackles all three seasons. He was a consensus All-American in 1985 and 1986 and the first ever two time Butkus Award Winner.

No dummy: Love him or hate him, few were better at marketing an image than Bosworth. He was also great in the classroom as a GTE/co-SIDA Academic All-American in 1986.

The Seahawk: Taken in the 1987 supplemental draft by Seattle, Bosworth signed the richest contract in Seahawk history signing for 10 years for $11 million. He was moved to the weak side, even though Boz had spent his entire career on the strong side to make all the defensive calls. He had his moments, but a shoulder injury forced him to retire after three years.

The "actor": Bosworth turned to Hollywood where his flamboyant image was good enough to appear in seven movies starring in Stone Cold in 1991 and such classics as Virus, Back in Business and The Operative.

Honors:

  • Butkus Award Winner - 1985, 1986
  • All-America - 1985, 1986
  • All-Big Eight - 1984, 1985, 1986
  • Academic All-America - 1986
